Tableau has come up with a lot of features in its new release of the beta version i.e. TABLEAU 10.0. In this article we are going to discuss some of the new features of Tableau beta.
Interface and Design
Tableau has modified the style of the interface and added a new design to the layout of the previous. It has also upgraded the formatting options and now you will be able to change the fonts and style on the worksheets with a few clicks. Tableau also added new color palette to the Tableau Visualizations. The changes to the fonts style, size and color are also included in this new release ans helps us build better visualization that clearly tell the story of our data. The interface is smooth and easy to understand.
Tableau in Mobile Devices
Device Specific Dashboards is a new mobile authoring feature coming in the Tableau 10.0. We use it to design customize and publish a single dashboard with optimized views for tablets and phones.
We believe that there was a unmet need for tableau authors to create dashboards that was consumable across lots of different devices. The vision of DSD is to author once view anywhere, so using the full analytical power and expressiveness of the desktop Tableau 10 provides to create the dashboards that adapts to the phone tablets and desktops. You also get a new feature that is the show preview where you can see the preview of the dashboard that is going to be displayed in different mobile devices. Clicking the show preview button provides 2 authoring tools one is the preview pane which allows you to choose the device type and model for the device on which you want to see the preview on. And the second is the Device Rim, this is the outline of the device where you want to customize your dashboard. Customizing the dashboard view for the phone does not change the customization for the desktop or tablet. So, it is highly user friendly. It is also available for the iOS and the Android devices.
Faster Data Connections and Prep updates
There are two new features of the Tableau 10 in the new release i.e. the wildcard union and the cross-database join.
Wildcard Union: In Tableau 9.3, tableau did not have the ability to do joins across multiple excel workbooks. But here in Tableau 10.0 it allows you to select multiple worksheets and workbooks in the data source and then perform a wildcard join and the new data is added in the data source.
Cross-Database join: If you want to bring in some data from other data sources inside tableau for the preparation of the analysis then here tableau automatically creates Cross-Database joins when you drag and drop the connection into the drag sheets here space. You can then see the different colours for the different database in the connections and the data tables.
Updated Analytics Tab in Tableau
Tableau 10 has extended the advanced analytics toolbox with the addition of k-means clustering. Sometimes your data set may contain groups of data. Clustering can be conveniently found in the analytics pane. Simply drag and drop it in the views and tableau will automatically cluster the data for you. You can use clusters in map view also and then we can add the different variables in the clusters and the clusters begin to converse. We can also drag and save clusters to the data pane which converts them into a group and then can use this group anywhere within the sheet. Clustering is not limited to the numeric fields we can also cluster the categorical fields.
We can select and group the states in a country and can create our Custom Territories and then you can remove the state and just see the territories of that country the we have created and if we use the measures on the territories then we can see the aggregated measure in the underlying territories. Here the Grouping is done on the selected territories and then the created groups can be reused using this feature in other analysis.
Cross Data source filtering
It happens many times that you may have different data sources and then you want to filter the data using a single field on the dashboard and you expect it to change for all the other sheets in the workbook. Here you can edit the relationships for different data sources and add the joins so that you can apply filters on all related data sources, and it will filter accordingly. The filter will apply on all the data sheets from the different data sources. But if you change the relationships then the filter will not work.
Tableau has added a new feature called the data Highlighter where you can highlight specific data while maintaining the context of the rest of the data. If in a scatter plot you want to highlight a particular entity from a particular field then you can just use the data highlighter where you can just click on the field from where you want to highlight a particular entity and click on show highlighter. It works on worksheets , filters and actions too.
Web Authoring is all about authoring the reports created in Tableau on web. After you publish a workbook to tableau server or online the formatting that you do or the changes you make to the workbook is called the web authoring. In Tableau 10 you are now able to create the dashboard on the web. Simply click the new dashboard button on the server and add as many as worksheets there and then you can edit and update the sheets and dashboards.
There are also some other features about which we shall discuss in the next article.
